This trip was such a breath of fresh air — literally! After months of managing my health and staying consistent with my routines, I finally got to take a vacation that felt easy on my body. I spent five days in beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico, and for the first time ever, I made it through a full trip completely symptom-free.
Here’s what helped me get there 👇
1️⃣ I Stayed Active — But in Balance
The resort had a great gym, and I actually enjoyed using it! I ran about 5 miles total across three days, which helped me feel grounded and energized. I also made sure to walk and explore — from the colorful streets of Old San Juan to the beautiful seaside views, I easily hit another 2–3 miles just sightseeing. Staying active without overdoing it kept my digestion moving and my energy up.

2️⃣ I Focused on Nourishing, Local Foods
I leaned into simple, whole ingredients — fresh fruits, local seafood, and yogurt became my go-to staples. I even enjoyed local favorites (like the grilled shrimp and watermelon salad in the photos below) while still keeping things gut-friendly and seed-oil free. Eating this way made such a difference in keeping me comfortable and bloat-free.

3️⃣ I Soaked Up the Sunshine (Safely!)
I spent time in the sun — soaking in all that natural vitamin D — but made sure to stay protected and hydrated. There’s something about warm sunshine and ocean air that instantly melts stress away.

4️⃣ I Kept Alcohol to a Minimum
This one made a big difference for me. I chose to only have one fun drink every other day — just enough to enjoy the moment without overwhelming my system. Keeping alcohol to a minimum helped prevent bloating and stomach upset, allowing me to stay symptom-free the entire trip.

5️⃣ I Prioritized Rest & Recovery
Vacations can be busy, but I made time for quiet moments too. The best splurge? A massage at our resort. It was not only relaxing but also great for lymphatic drainage and stress relief. My body (and mind) needed that more than I realized.

6️⃣ I Listened to My Body — Always
The biggest reason this trip was so successful? I paid attention. I ate when I was hungry, rested when I was tired, and didn’t push myself to do everything. Slowing down actually allowed me to enjoy more.
This trip reminded me that it is possible to travel and feel good — even with chronic GI challenges. A little planning, balance, and self-awareness go a long way.
If you’re navigating your own chronic illness journey, I hope this gives you a little hope that “good days” are absolutely possible — even on vacation 💛
Love you all — stay hydrated, stay balanced, and don’t forget to take care of you.
